On September 29, 2017, the Chef Ann Foundation is bringing a Celebrity Chef Edition of The Real School Food Challenge to New Orleans. The organizers will be challenging a group of New Orleans’ most prominent chefs to create healthy school lunch recipes for just US$1.25 per meal.

Each recipe will be required to meet U.S. Department of Agriculture healthy meal guidelines for school lunches and is designed to give participants an appreciation for the challenges faced daily by school food service professionals.

The chefs competing include Coquette’s Kristen Essig and Michael Stoltzfus, Jason Goodenough of Carrollton Market, Ryan Prewitt of Pêche, and Rebecca Wilcomb of Herbsaint.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 60 percent of children do not eat enough fruit and 93 percent of kids don’t eat enough vegetables. The Chef Ann Foundation contends that the school food system is in the perfect place to alleviate this crisis because more than 30 million children eat school lunch each day.

Money raised by the event will go towards supporting the upward mobility of food service professionals working in New Orleans schools. It will provide scholarships to help them satisfy professional development requirements, receive in-depth training, and develop strategic vision through the School Food Institute.
